The Great Horned Owl
The Great Horned Owl is a powerful nocturnal predator known for its specialized adaptations, earning it the nickname "tiger with wings." It uses prominent feather tufts, called plumicorns, for camouflage, and its specially-fringed feathers allow for nearly silent flight. Because its large eyes are fixed, it compensates by rotating its head up to 270 degrees. This fierce raptor has an incredibly diverse diet, including skunks, and reuses the abandoned nests of other large birds when it begins its nesting season in the early winter months.
