Black is actually the most common coat color in cats, as the gene for expressing the dark pigment, eumelanin, is genetically dominant. Though they appear uniformly dark, many black cats are actually "secret tabbies"—if they have an underlying tabby gene, prolonged sun exposure can break down the black pigment, causing their coat to "rust" and reveal faint, rusty-colored stripes. Thanks to high levels of melanin, the same pigment that darkens their fur, most black cats are also known for their striking yellow or golden-copper eyes.
Despite the common American superstition that a black cat crossing your path brings bad luck, they are considered symbols of good fortune in many cultures around the world. For instance, in Japan, black cats are thought to bring luck and even attract suitable romantic partners for single women. Historically, British sailors believed having a black cat on board would guarantee a safe voyage and a return home.
