Pit bulls are not a single breed, but rather a term used to encompass several breeds like the American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and other mixes with a similar look and lineage. Historically, they were once affectionately nicknamed "Nanny Dogs" in the early 20th century due to their patient, loyal, and gentle nature with children, and they have even served as symbols of American courage and patriotism, famously including Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated dog of World War I. Despite their controversial reputation, temperament tests often rank these dogs as being highly tolerant and they do not possess a physiological "locking jaw" as is commonly rumored; rather, their tenacity is due to their strong drive and muscle, which also makes them excel in dog sports like agility and flyball. These intelligent dogs are highly trainable and generally thrive on human companionship, often displaying a playful and affectionate demeanor.
